I saw, and loved, the movie Arrival without knowing it was based on one of Ted Chiang's short stories (Story of Your Life, on the almost-eponymous book), so when I found it out, I had to read something by him. And boy, am I glad I did. Like it happened with Paolo Bacigalupi's The Fluted Girl, I was blown away by the sheer originality and ingenuity of his tales: Chiang writes with equal mastery about steampunk nannies and quantum physiscs, ancient megaconstructions and time travel, alien linguistics and avatar obsolescence. Often sparked by one simple "what if" (What if alchemy really worked? What if there were irrefutable proof that the Universe was created by God? What if we could see the consequences of the choices we didn't make?), Chiang's stories are both amazing intellectual games and deep reflections on the most fundamental questions about our world and ourselves. And, equally if not more important, they are enthralling, fascinating reads, that can frame even the most abstruse subjects in engaging narrations.
Without a doubt one of the best discoveries of this 2020.

Ho visto, e amato, il film Arrival senza sapere che fosse basato su uno dei racconti di Ted Chiang (Story of Your Life, sul libro quasi omonimo), quindi quando l'ho scoperto, ho dovuto leggere qualcosa di suo. E sono felicissimo di averlo fatto. Come mi era successo con The Fluted Girl, di Paolo Bacigalupi, l'originalità e l'inventiva delle sue storie mi hanno lasciato a bocca aperta. Chiang racconta di tate steampunk e fisica quantistica, di megacostruzioni antiche e viaggio nel tempo, di linguistica aliena e obsolescenza di avatar, e tutto con la stessa maestria. Spesso la scintilla che fa scattare la narrazione è un semplice "cosa succederebbe se...?" (Cosa succederebbe se l'alchimia funzionasse davvero? E se ci fosse la prova inconfutabile che l'Universo è stato creato da Dio? E se potessimo vedere le conseguenze delle scelte che non abbiamo fatto?), e le storie risultanti sono allo stesso tempo degli straordinari giochi intellettuali, e delle riflessioni non banali sulle domande fondamentali su di noi e sul nostro mondo. E, cosa altrettanto se non più importante, le sue sono storie avvincenti e affascinanti, che riescono a rendere anche gli argomenti più cervellotici il punto centrale di una narrazione coinvolgente.
Senza dubbio una delle migliori scoperte di questo 2020.
