GoodreadsRece: Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman - Good Omens

I re-read Good Omens, ten years after the first time, to get ready for the upcoming series on Prime Video (and I will start the first episode the second I finish writing this) and just a few pages in I realized something: I terribly miss Terry Pratchett. I discovered him way too late in life, just a decade ago or so, but he became one of my favourite writers, both for what he wrote, and for how he wrote it, and this book is one of the best things ever to come out of his imagination.
Not only his, of course - and in some pages the dreamy wickedness of Neil Gaiman, who, by the way, is another one of my favourite writers, is unmistakable - but I think the general tone of Good Omens is more Pratchett-esque than Gaiman-esque; and since it was the first novel by Sir Terry I read since The Shepherd's Crown, in 2015, it had all the nostalgic beauty of a meeting with an old friend.
The book is, quite simply, a masterpiece. It's a tale about the Armageddon and the coming of the Antichrist, both funny and moving, both epic and intimate, and even my most enthusiastic words of praise wouldn't do it justice. Do yourself a favour and go grab a copy as soon as you can.

Ho riletto Buona Apocalisse a tutti, dieci anni dopo la prima volta, per prepararmi alla visione della serie su Prime Video (e inizierò il primo episodio appena finisco di scrivere queste righe), e mi sono bastate un paio di pagine per rendermi conto di una cosa: Terry Pratchett mi manca terribilimente. L'ho scoperto decisamente troppo tardi, solo una decina di anni fa, ma è diventato uno dei miei scrittori preferiti, sia per quello che ha scritto, sia per come lo ha scritto, e questo libro è una delle cose migliori mai uscite dalla sua immaginazione.
Non solo dalla sua, ovviamente - e in alcune pagine la malvagità sognante di Neil Gaiman che, tra parentesi, è un altro dei miei scrittori preferiti, è inconfondibile - ma credo che il tono generale di Buona Apocalisse a tutti sia più Pratchett-iano che Gaiman-iano; e visto che è il primo romanzo di Sir Terry che leggo da The Shepherd's Crown, nel 2015, ha avuto tutta la bellezza nostalgica dell'incontro con un vecchio amico.
Il libro è, molto semplicemente, un capolavoro. Parla dell'Armageddon e della venuta dell'Anticristo, è divertente e commovente, epico e intimo, e nemmeno le mie lodi più entusiastiche gli renderebbero giustizia. Fatevi un favore, recuperatene una copia prima che potete.
