I confirm what I wrote in my review of the first book: "this is one of the most captivating and original sci-fi [stories] I read in a long time. And as all good sci-fi, behind its bio-manipulation and anti-gravity tech façade, it deals with timeless themes such as social justice, revenge, identity, leadership, loyalty." Half epistolary novel, half time-war sci-fi chronicle, written in the richest, most poetic English you could desire, there is really very little more I can say about this novella without spoilering. This book is not one tale, but three intertwined ones. The main, and the grandest one, as the title suggests, is that of the rise and fall of the dinosaurs: how they came to be, how they utterly dominated life on Earth for more than one hundred million years (to put things in perspective, we Homo sapiens have been on this planet for a mere three hundred thousand), and how they suddenly and almost entirely disappeared, leaving behind their fossilized bones, nests and footprints (oh, and also what we now call "birds"). I know, reading a book about zoonosis during the COVID-19 pandemic is quite banal, but in my defense, I had Spillover on my to-read list since 2013, so it was just a case of finding the right occasion. It's, quite simply, one of the best popular science book I've ever read, and probably the best written. Quammen's prose is terse, clear and engaging, and he has that rarest of gifts, of making even the most abstruse scientific and medical concepts understandble without sacrificing exactitude. As for the content: Spillover is both terrifying and uplifting, often in the same page.
