Questa non vuole essere solo una recensione per il libro di Costa (che comunque consiglio senza riserve, more on that later ), quanto un endorsement di tutti i suoi progetti giornalistici sugli USA, che mi spiace avere scoperto solo alla fine dello scorso anno. I suoi articoli sul Post , la sua newsletter e il suo podcast (entrambi dall'azzeccato nome Da Costa a Costa , tutte le informazioni si trovano qui ) sono stati un riferimento costante e una guida preziosa durante questa storica campagna elettorale, e attualmente Costa è probabilmente il giornalista italiano più competente, informato e preciso tra quelli che cercano di raccontare gli Stati Uniti contemporanei. [This review is for both Stories of Your Life and Others and Exhalation , and for both the rating should be 4.5 out of 5 stars] I saw, and loved, the movie Arrival without knowing it was based on one of Ted Chiang's short stories ( Story of Your Life , on the almost-eponymous book), so when I found it out, I had to read something by him. And boy, am I glad I did. Like it happened with Paolo Bacigalupi's The Fluted Girl , I was blown away by the sheer originality and ingenuity of his tales: Chiang writes with equal mastery about steampunk nannies and quantum physiscs, ancient megaconstructions and time travel, alien linguistics and avatar obsolescence. Often sparked by one simple "what if" (What if alchemy really worked? What if there were irrefutable proof that the Universe was created by God? What if we could see the consequences of the choices we didn't make?), Chiang's stories are both amazing intellectual games and deep reflection...

I confirm what I wrote in my review of the first book: "this is one of the most captivating and original sci-fi [stories] I read in a long time. Half epistolary novel, half time-war sci-fi chronicle, written in the richest, most poetic English you could desire, there is really very little more I can say about this novella without spoilering. I don't know if it's a solvable problem, almost certainly not in the short term, but I welcome any and all sources that can, at the very least, help define and describe where conspiracy theories come from, why they are so attractive and what can be done to limit their dissemination. This book is not one tale, but three intertwined ones. The main, and the grandest one, as the title suggests, is that of the rise and fall of the dinosaurs: how they came to be, how they utterly dominated life on Earth for more than one hundred million years (to put things in perspective, we Homo sapiens have been on this planet for a mere three hundred thousand), and how they suddenly and almost entirely disappeared, leaving behind their fossilized bones, nests and footprints (oh, and also what we now call "birds"). Anche per una persona come me, che ha sempre ritenuto l'industria dei cosmetici un gigantesco spreco di talenti, i libri di Mautino sul tema si sono rivelati una lettura affascinante. Nel primo Il trucco c'è e si vede vengono analizzate le astuzie, quando non le vere e proprie pratiche ai limiti della circonvenzione di incapace, del marketing della bellezza; in questo, come da titolo, lo sguardo è rivolto principalmente alla scienza della cosmesi: come funziona una tintura per capelli?
