GoodreadsRece: Mary Robinette Kowal - The Calculating Stars & The Fated Sky

[This review is for both The Calculating Stars and The Fated Sky ; I read them back-to-back, and they are, really, the two halves of a single story.] I read someone describing this duology as The Right Stuff meets Hidden Figures meets The Martian and, even if I only watched the movies based on the first two books, while I enjoyed both movie and book for the third, I quite agree. Of course there is much more than that, but it's a safe bet that if you liked at least one of those three, you'll love this alternate space exploration history that Kowal crafts from the Meteor impact of 1952 onward (OK, strictly speaking, this is a spoiler, but it's literally told in the first sentence of The Calculating Stars , so I don't feel so bad about it). It's a story of stubborness and determination, of impossibile choices and suffocating rules, of discrimination and obtusity; it's got one of the most well-fleshed, imperfect, believable...

FilmRece: Ford v. Ferrari

Ferrari , uscito in Italia come Le Mans '66 .

GoodreadsRece: Seanan McGuire - Middlegame

[Lo so, lo so, ho in arretrato recensioni di libri che ho letto a gennaio di quest'anno. Shame on me . Ho comunque intenzione di recuperarle tutte, prima o poi.] This is my first Seanan McGuire book (I read - and enjoyed - the Newsflesh and Parasitology trilogies she published as Mira Grant), and what a book it is. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but it most definitely was not this amazing tale of alchemy, language and math, of intertwined souls and of learning to be who you are, of sacrifice and betrayal, of road better not taken and bonds better not broken. It's a hard book to define: it's certainly fantasy, but I couldn't say much beyond that; for sure it's unique and it's one of the most captivating, enthralling and moving books I read in a long time.

GoodreadsRece: Neil Gaiman - Art Matters (illustrated by Chris Riddell)

This book collects four short(ish) texts by Neil Gaiman, beautifully illustrated by Chris Riddell, all broadly on the topic of creating, and enjoyng (or not) other people's creations. These kind of books, I think, always risk of suffering of what in Italy could be called "Baci Perugina Syndrome", meaning that they can be nothing more than a mishmash of beautifully written platitudes and banalities. Gaiman being Gaiman, this is emphatically not the case. Granted, it's a very short book, that reads in an hour or even less, but it addresses issues anything but banal, in an anything but banal way. From the ode to free speech and free circulation of ideas of the starting Credo , to the wholehearted invitation to create (books, dance, music, paintings, everything ) of the last, and longest Make Good Art , the whole book is a delight for the eyes, the brain and the heart. More, it's a precious insight in the mind of one of the greatest creators of our...

GoodreadsRece: Daniel Keyes - Flowers for Algernon

Prima o poi. Sigh.   I first read the original short story in the seminal italian sci-fi anthology Le meraviglie del possibile when I was a kid (twenty-five years ago at least, alas), and I loved it. I re-read it (for the first time in English) while reading the novel, and as it happened with Ender's Game , I think it's much, much better. The short story has a strength, an urgency, an intimacy that the two-hundred-ish extra pages of the novel do nothing but dilute, while adding nothing really important. So, if you want to read (as you should) about the rise and fall of Charlie Gordon and Algernon, just skip the novel entirely and try to locate a good anthology with the short story in it. If you read Italian, Le meraviglie del possibile is a great one.
